IOT - Internet of ThingsOne up-and-coming term that is used in a wide variety of industries is IoT. This is the inter-networking of physical devices, vehicles (also referred to as “connected devices” and “smart devices”), buildings, and other items – embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity that enable these objects to collect and exchange data. In layman’s terms, IoT is frequently brought up when talking about security in connecting new devices/technology with existing technologies.

The U.S. National Intelligence Council says that it would be hard to deny “access to networks of sensors and remotely-controlled objects by enemies of the United States, criminals, and mischief makers… An open market for aggregated sensor data could serve the interests of commerce and security no less than it helps criminals and spies identify vulnerable targets. Thus, massively parallel sensor fusion may undermine social cohesion, if it proves to be fundamentally incompatible with Fourth-Amendment guarantees against unreasonable search.” In general, the intelligence community views the internet of things as a rich source of data. With new technologies involving your phones, and Bluetooth to open/shut doors, such as the Twist and Go feature by HID, the internet of things is certainly going to be something we will continue to hear about in the coming months.

As a response to increasing concerns over security, the Internet of Things Security Foundation was launched on 23 September 2015. IoTSF has a mission to secure the internet of things by promoting knowledge and best practice. Its founding board is made of technology providers and telecommunications companies including BT, Vodafone, Imagination Technologies, and Pen Test Partners. The amount of technology providers and telecommunication companies involved with the IoTSF is likely to continue to increase in the coming years, including many companies who currently make control access systems and badging software.
