Police Begin Printing Child ID Cards To Protect Community

Overview:

Precious minutes are saved when law enforcement can quickly access a child’s information during a disaster. That is why a police department in North Carolina has recently purchased a digital fingerprint identification machine to register children in the community and print child ID cards.

Challenge:

Should the occasion arise, parents or guardians need to quickly relay information to the police, thus speeding up the process of finding a missing child. “If we have to use it and it saves one child, it’s worth its weight in gold,” said the Police Chief. Officers have two hours to submit a child’s information to the Division of Criminal Information (DCI) to initiate an Amber alert. Having the identification cards and saved information in the department’s computer system will allow officers to submit information well within that time frame.

We hope that there should never be a situation when these child ID cards need to be utilized, however, in emergency situations, these cards could be an indispensable resource. If a child is ever kidnapped or lost, whatever the case may be, parents or guardians can contact law enforcement and have something tangible that they can hand the officer with everything they need to know about the child with an updated picture. These oversized child ID cards would need to list the child’s demographic information, such as height and weight, along with an updated photo and the child’s fingerprints.

Solutions:

After consultation with the ADVANTIDGE team, the identification card system was created and consists of a laptop for portability, a fingerprint scanner, a printer, and a camera, which can create an identification card for parents/guardians to safeguard. The information is also saved to the department’s computer system, making it easily accessible in case of an emergency.

Since its arrival, the system has made its way around the local town with at least 200 children receiving an identification card at local events such as the town’s Christmas parade and fall festival. The department also visited the local Elementary School and the Head Start program to register children.
