General

  • How often must I clean the printer rollers?
We recommend the printer rollers are cleaned with the appropriate Magicard cleaning card every time the dye film is replaced.
  • What is dye-sublimation printing?
Dye sublimation, or dye-sub, is known for its high quality photographic output. Thermal printing is used to place layers of dye into the card surface. Dye sublimation is also known as “Dye Diffusion” or “Thermal Transfer”. Inside a dye sublimation printer is a roll of transparent film that resembles sheets of red, blue, yellow, and black colored cellophane stuck together end to end. On one surface of this film are solid dyes corresponding to the four basic colors used in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Between the solid dye and the film is a layer of release agent, which controls the amount of dye released at each temperature. The print head is heated up as it passes over the film, causing the dye to vaporize and permeate the glossy surface of the PVC card before returning to solid form on cooling. This is sublimation. Sublimation means to heat something and turn it into a vapor, then to form it back into a solid. Because the pigments go from solid, to gas, and back to solid, there is little mess compared to ink. The vaporized colors permeate the surface of the card, creating a gentle gradation at the edges of each pixel, instead of the conspicuous border between the dye dots on the card produced by inkjets. For more information see the Dye-Sublimation Printing Guide.
  • What is duplex printing?
Duplex Printing is the ability to print both sides of the same card with high quality 300dpi images with true colors, right to the edge of the card. Dual-sided printing is available with the following printers:

When used with the optional Magicard HoloPatch™ card stock, one of the security logos is highlighted by a highly reflective gold ’super-diffuser’ patch, making the logo clearly visible under all lighting conditions. HoloKote™ with HoloPatch™ has a similar appearance to credit card hologram patches.
  • What is a Custom Key?
Your choice of text and/or logos for the HoloKote™ and HoloPatch™ security features, using the Custom Key. Custom security logos are applied to the card only when the Custom Key is inserted into the printer.
  • What is HoloKote?
The patented Magicard HoloKote™ anti-forgery card protection eliminates the threat from fake IDs and is standard on all Rio2e & Tango2e models. HoloKote™ is an anti-copying watermark across the entire card surface, that becomes visible when the card is viewed at an angle. There is no additional cost involved in printing HoloKote cards.

  • Do I have to use genuine Magicard branded dye-film ribbon?
Using genuine Magicard dye film ribbons that are designed for use with your Magicard printer is the most important thing you can do to ensure consistent card printing and printer reliability. Cloned dye film ribbons are potentially available for some Magicard printer models, but they could cause a number of different printer problems. For this reason, the Magicard UltraCoverPlus Warranty is invalid if these clone ribbons are used. See the Magicard Technical Bulletin for more details.

  • How do I ensure that cards eject properly?
Card ejecting can fail if the card output stacker is not located fully home in the front appature or if it has become overfilled. To fit the stacker correctly, insert it into the aperture in the printer’s front panel and push it until it ‘click’s into place. The stacker can hold up to 30 x 20mil to 40mil (0.51mm to 1.02mm) thick cards, empty it when it when full.
