Frequently Asked Questions

  • How often must I clean the Prima4 printer rollers?
We recommend the printer rollers are cleaned with the appropriate Magicard cleaning card every time the dye film is replaced.
  • What is dye-sublimation printing?
Dye sublimation, or dye-sub, is known for its high quality photographic output. Thermal printing is used to place layers of dye into the card surface. Dye sublimation is also known as “Dye Diffusion” or “Thermal Transfer”. Inside a dye sublimation printer is a roll of transparent film that resembles sheets of red, blue, yellow, and black colored cellophane stuck together end to end. On one surface of this film are solid dyes corresponding to the four basic colors used in printing: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Between the solid dye and the film is a layer of release agent, which controls the amount of dye released at each temperature. The print head is heated up as it passes over the film, causing the dye to vaporize and permeate the glossy surface of the PVC card before returning to solid form on cooling. This is sublimation. Sublimation means to heat something and turn it into a vapor, then to form it back into a solid. Because the pigments go from solid, to gas, and back to solid, there is little mess compared to ink. The vaporized colors permeate the surface of the card, creating a gentle gradation at the edges of each pixel, instead of the conspicuous border between the dye dots on the card produced by inkjets. For more information see the Dye-Sublimation Printing Guide.
  • What is duplex printing?
Duplex Printing is the ability to print both sides of the same card with high quality 300dpi images with true colors, right to the edge of the card. Duplex printing is available with the following Magicard printers:
    Prima 2e
    Tango 2e
    Tango+L
    Avalon Duo.
  • What is HoloPatch?
When used with the optional Magicard HoloPatch™ card stock, one of the security logos is highlighted by a highly reflective gold ‘super-diffuser’ patch, making the logo clearly visible under all lighting conditions. HoloKote™ with HoloPatch™ has a similar appearance to credit card hologram patches.
  • What is a Custom Key?
Your choice of text and/or logos for the HoloKote™ and HoloPatch™ security features, using the Custom Key. Custom security logos are applied to the card only when the Custom Key is inserted into the printer.
  • What is HoloKote?
The patented Magicard HoloKote™ anti-forgery card protection eliminates the threat from fake IDs and is standard on all Rio2e & Tango2e models. HoloKote™ is an anti-copying watermark across the entire card surface, that becomes visible when the card is viewed at an angle. There is no additional cost involved in printing HoloKote cards.
  • What is Full-Bleed printing?
High-quality 300dpi images, with true colors, right to the edge of the card. Full-Bleed printing is standard on all Magicard printers.

Cloned dye film ribbons are potentially available for some Magicard printer models, but they could cause a number of different printer problems. For this reason, the Magicard UltraCoverPlus Warranty is invalid if these clone ribbons are used. See the Magicard Technical Bulletin for more details.

Problem Solving

  • Why can’t I mag encode from BadgeMaker Software?
Some versions of BadgeMaker software require the Magicard printer to have a specific name: The printer should be called: ‘PrintMagic MAGICARD Printer’.
  • My computer does not seem to detect the printer’s USB connection.
This is especially relevant if the computer you are configuring for the USB connection has at some time run another manufacturer’s printer (e.g. Eltron C-Series printer).
Any one of three Windows files necessary for the Magicard installation could be missing. See USB Connection Not Detected Guide
  • Where can I find instructions on how to clean the printer rollers?
Clear step-by-step cleaning instructions are given in Section 10 of the Tango 2e User Manual”.
  • How often should I clean the rollers of my Tango2e printer?
Cleaning your printer is important! The rollers in the printer should be cleaned EVERY time the dye-film ribbon is changed. This will prevent a build-up of dirt on the rollers – which can otherwise start to cause image ghosting and card feeding problems after as little as 350 cards or so. Clear step-by-step cleaning instructions are given in Section 10 of the Tango2e User Manual.
  • What is included in a Magicard cleaning kit?
There are three main parts to the Cleaning Kit – 10 Cleaning Cards, 5 Cleaning Rollers and a Cleaning Pen :-
    1. You use a Cleaning Card to remove dirt from the print path. This should be used after every 350 prints (i.e every time you replace your ribbon). If you print only a few cards a day, we recommend that you clean the printer more often.
    2. There is a disposable Cleaning Roller in the printer, which should be replaced after every
1000 prints (roughly after using 3 rolls of ribbon).
    3. There is also a Cleaning Pen, which is used to clean the printhead. We recommend you use this if any lines are seen on printed cards.
Clear step-by-step cleaning instructions are given in Section 10 of the Tango2e User Manual.
  • I keep getting an error. How do I resolve it?
Take a look at the Tango2e Trouble Shooting Guide for resolving the most common problems encountered by Tango2e users.
  • Why do I get ‘Out of Dye-Film 10:21′ error frequently?
This error can occur when printing very dense images.
Updating your firmware to version 3.02 or higher should help.
  • Why is Landscape/Portrait selection greyed-out?
Select the ‘Printer’ tab, un-tick the ‘Application determines orientation’ box.
  • How do I adjust the position of the HoloPatch?

The HoloPatch position can be ‘fine-tuned’ using the Magicard Support Utility.
Please read the HoloPatch Adustment document for full details.

  • How do I find the MAC address of my printer?
The Rio 2e, Tango 2e & Tango +L printer models have a unique MAC address.

Consumables

  • What type of cards should I use with the Tango2e printer?
Card Size = PVC ISO CR80 (for all Magicard Printers)
    Card Thickness:- 0.51mm to 1.6mm (0.020″ to 0.063″)
For the best image quality always use high quality video grade PVC cards.
Pure PVC card stock or laminated PVC/polyester cards are available. The latter are more durable and better suited to heavy use and heat lamination when required. For access control and smart card applications, your dealer should provide the appropriate type for direct to card printing. For good consistent results, stick to a single variety of good quality cards, such as those available from your Magicard dealer. For more information please read Section 7 of the Tango2e User Manual.
  • What dye-film should I use with my Tango2e printer?
LC1 dye-film is the appropriate choice for colour printing with the Rio2e printer.
LC6/LC3 dye-film – where cost is critical, monochrome printing is a fraction of the cost of colour printing.
For more information on selecting the best dye-film to use for any intended application, please read Section 3 of the Tango2e User Manual.
