Advantidge Supports Veterans Administration on 500+ Fargo HDP5000 ID Card Printers

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012

Advantidge has won a contract to support the National Veterans Administration (VA) with their more than 500 HID Global Fargo HDP5000 ID card printers at national and international VA ID card credentialing centers.

The Veterans Administration adheres to the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) PIV ID badge processing regulations, implemented by President George W. Bush Aug. 27, 2004, requiring the development of a secure interagency personal identity verification process for federal employees and contractors.

PIV ID cards are compliant with FIPS 201 standards and have certain required elements that must appear on the front and back of cards, such as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) digital certificates and biometric smart card features.

PIV ID cards are used at all VA facilities, and in addressing the high volume of ID card printing required by the enormous quantity of VA members, the Veterans Administration relies on HID Global Fargo’s trusted HDP5000 ID card printers for the printing of their secure HSPD-12 PIV VA member ID Badges.

Advantidge’s years of industry experience ensure successful support of the VA’s existing HDP5000 ID card printers and as needs arise, the implementation of new ID card systems that continue to meet federal security guidelines.

LAX Upgrades to the New Zebra ZXP8 ID Card Printers With Advantidge

Tuesday, May 1st, 2012

In LAX International Airport’s most recent ID card printer system upgrade they once again turned to Advantidge, Inc. to assist them in choosing the right ID card printers for their ultra high-security ID badging operations.

Since September 11, 2001 the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has required that every airport in the country upgrade the security of the ID badges used by airport employees and all others who work on airport premises. LAX has additionally implemented the Transportation Worker Identity Credential (TWIC) Program, which establishes regulations for a system-wide common credential card for all personnel requiring unescorted physical and/or logical access to secure areas of a transportation system.

The national TWIC program requires the issuance of a tamper-resistant Smart Card containing the biometric fingerprint information of authorized employees, in order to ensure that authorized smart cards belong to the people carrying them. Taking into account their need for fast, high-volume ID card printing incorporating top of the line security features that meet TWIC standards, Advantidge guided the LAX security team to the Zebra ZXP Series 8 ID Card Printer, which they are now using with dual technology iClass magstripe cards instead of regular proximity cards for added security.

The Zebra ZXP Series 8 Retransfer ID card printer is known for creating vividly colored plastic ID cards with print speeds that far exceed any other retransfer ID card printer on the market, and with the ZXP8 image-processing technology image errors often caused by high print speeds are compensated for.

ZXP Series 8 print speeds remain unmatched by any other ID card printer in the industry, and are more than 2X as fast as the Fargo ID card printers previously used in LAX ID badging operations. These fast print speeds along with the features of reduced card movement creating fewer ID card jam issues, improved network controls in Windows Server environments and local support available from authorized factory technicians, are why LAX confidently chose to add the ZXP 8 ID card printer to their security team as the new ID card system for their TWIC ID card printing.

Export Restrictions from the Advantidge Legal Department

Monday, March 21st, 2011

In connection with the unrest in Libya and effective immediately, the United States has implemented economic sanctions against the government of Libya, as well as senior members of the Libyan government and specifically named members of the Qadhafi family. In addition to freezing their economic assets and property, the sanctions broadly prohibit US companies and individuals from providing goods or services (in our case ID card printing products) directly or indirectly to the government of Libya, its senior members and members of the Qadhafi family. For purposes of these sanctions, the government of Libya also includes state-owned enterprises.

As a U.S. distributor of ID card printing products, Advantidge’s products are subject to U.S. export control laws and export sanctions. Advantidge and our partners (the manufacturers’ of these products) are obligated to comply with these restrictions. Accordingly, until these sanctions are lifted, it is prohibited for Advantidge to re-export any ID card products (or provide any services related to ID card printing products) to the government of Libya, senior members of the Libyan government or members of the Qadhafi family, or companies owned or controlled by any of the foregoing.

As a reminder, United States export restrictions also include the prohibition against exporting products to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan and Syria, and accordingly, Advantidge does not re-export ID products or ID card systems to these countries. Any ID card products sold or re-exported in violation of these restrictions are not be covered by product warranty.

Thank you for your attention in this important matter.

A Biodegradable Corn-Based ID Card?

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

LOS ANGELES, Calif., June 22, 2008 – DailyBreeze.com After 9-11, the Federal Aviation Administration sent out an order requiring several high profile airports including LAX to rebadge all of their employees with new identification cards.

For LAX, this meant quickly rebadging nearly 45,000 workers.

The airport called upon Advantidge Inc., an El Segundo-based reseller of security and identification cards and related solutions, to help with this seemingly unwieldy feat.

With Advantidge-supplied printers running around the clock, in less than two weeks LAX reached its goal and met the FAA’s new standards.

Advantidge’s accomplishment was notable especially since the company was only a few months old at the time.

CEO Lawrence Grafstein founded Advantidge in May 2001, only four months before LAX’s rebadging.

Advantidge’s core product is the identification system, which includes identification cards, printers, software and other equipment and support.

The company offers several types of identification cards, including student ID cards, hotel key cards, hospital identification cards, security clearance cards, gift cards and more.

Advantidge buys equipment from manufacturers, such as Fargo Electronics Inc., HID Corp. and Zebra Technologies Corp., and resells directly to end users or in some cases through an integrator.

“In many cases we are providing hardware, software, equipment and support,” Grafstein said.

The firm of six employees works within several industries, including education, health, transportation, security and law enforcement.

In the greater Los Angeles area alone, Advantidge works with more than 50 different law enforcement agencies, including the Torrance Police Department, Grafstein said.

Industrywide, the majority of identification cards are printed on a petroleum-based plastic called polyvinyl chloride, or PVC.

Advantidge offers four types of PVC identification cards: blank or basic PVC cards, magnetic stripe cards, proximity cards and smart cards.

The most common and cheapest card in the industry is the basic PVC card, Grafstein said. Basic PVC cards are typically used for photo identification but can also be used as membership cards, gift cards, and visitor passes.

“Second to that would be magnetic stripe cards, where you start having some functionality,” Grafstein said.

Most universities today use magnetic stripe cards, he said. A magnetic stripe card, similar to a credit card or driver’s license, has a fixed number stored on the card and when swiped, pulls up the identification number and matches it against an account number in the system.

Advantidge’s customers include Cal State and UC campuses, Grafstein said.

Newer identification applications require technology cards. Smart cards have chips embedded in the surface of each card and have the ability to store multiple areas of information.

For example, smart cards can store a biometric template, such as a fingerprint.

“In addition to presenting the card for access, you would also place your fingerprint as a form of additional verification,” Grafstein said. “Instead of pulling that information from a central database where you have to have a massive software and server infrastructure in place – the information is stored there right on the card.”

All of these identification cards, however, are made with PVC plastic, which can be dangerous to human health and the environment.

Advantidge, though, has begun its own eco-friendly campaign.

In April, it began offering clients the option to purchase recycled PVC cards, which are more durable than the industry’s standard PVC card.

It also began selling the corn card, an eco-friendly card made from a special type of corn that does not affect human corn supply. Unlike PVC cards, corn cards are 100 percent biodegradable, and no toxins are released when the cards are properly disposed.

The company offers the corn card and the recycled PVC card only in the basic and magnetic stripe identification cards.

Advantidge officials said some organizations have already ordered thousands of the new corn cards and recycled PVC cards, including California State University Long Beach, which plans to use recycled PVC cards beginning this fall for its gift cards from the campus book store.

Grafstein admits, though, that the introduction of the corn card and recycled PVC cards into the market is relatively small at this point, but he hopes to play a role in helping educate the market about the new eco-friendly cards.

“Most people wouldn’t even think … that there would be an alternative to a standard card,” Grafstein said.

Advantidge also introduced lanyards made out of bamboo rather than nylon or other materials stemming from PVC that the market often uses to display identification cards.

Grafstein said he recently spoke with a customer from a movie studio in Los Angeles who asked for some of the bamboo samples.

“Somebody caught her in the office rubbing the fabric lanyard up against her face because it was so soft,” he laughed.

For now, though, Advantidge plans to target companies who go through the largest volume of cards and who internally are more likely to have some type of socially responsible purchasing mandate, such as prominent institutions funded by tax dollars, Grafstein said.

“The green campaign is an example of the proactive efforts that we are making to grow as a company and hopefully to be able to play a role in changing the industry,” Grafstein said.
